Taking Good Care Of Your Pet Puppies

Who doesn’t love a puppy? With their cute faces and wet noses, many find them great to care for. It may look like great fun to take care of a puppy, but it actually entails a lot of responsibility and attention to detail.

Puppies are born each day at a high rate, around five million new puppies if you only consider the USA. And about one third of families in the USA are dog owners. Before introduced into the world, puppy dogs stay inside their mothers’ wombs for about 60 days. A puppy’s senses are underdeveloped upon birth – they cannot see, hear, and have very little sense of smell. Puppies’ eyes stay closed in their first two weeks from birth. It takes about a month for a puppy to fully develop its sense of sight. Puppies are able to smell and hear in a similarly fast amount of time. Shortly before its first month, the average puppy would start growing temporary teeth. By their fourth month, their 42 permanent teeth begin to develop. You can help the process by getting some chew toys for your puppy. This would be important since puppies need to chew to accelerate the loss of their baby teeth.

A newly-born puppy would need to be close to its mother and siblings for added comfort. Like young children, puppies depend a lot on their mother and need to socialize with other dogs – the weaning process can take up to two months.

When buying a puppy, do so with discretion. It’s not just important to consider one’s needs, but also those of the owner’s family and neighbors. You wouldn’t be too popular with your neighbors if you have a naughty or noisy puppy. A puppy’s owner should be more sensitive to the puppy’s comfort and well being. Pose questions to yourself before going out and buying a puppy. Is it important to buy your puppy a cage or pen to avoid dirtying up your backyard? Take into consideration the size of the puppy and the size of the house where you live in. Do you need to regularly exercise your puppy? Puppies are very energetic and need to run some of that energy off. A puppy can either be docile (well-behaved) or playful (usually hyperactive) – which would you prefer? Your puppy’s cleanliness and ease of maintenance should be thought of. Is buying the right food for your puppy in your budget? Is your budget amenable to giving your puppy proper veterinary maintenance? Puppies need to be vaccinated once they reach 6-8 weeks, then would need booster shots at around 12 to 16 weeks.

If you know how to care for your puppy, they can be very enjoyable pets. Appreciate this fact. Exercise care in naming your puppies, give them a name suited to its personality and call it by that name. Puppies need to be showered with affection and attention, and given treats for a job well done. Your puppy would then reward you back with unconditional love. This is “puppy love” in a literal, yet accurate definition.
